Building by Remote ControlIs it crazy or is it courageous? It’s exciting, that’s for sure, to be building a house at the other end of the world in New Zealand, and watching the building process in Germany via a website.
In December 2012/January 2013 I was in New Zealand for a one-month “holiday”. During this time I bought a section, as it is called in Kiwi English: a bare piece of land in a new residential development in Tauranga. I also managed to discuss almost all necessary details with the building company I had chosen to build a small house with, signed the contract, sorted out payment procedures, and even liaised with a number of building contractors. All this happened during the “silly season” when most NZ businesses close down for the Christmas holiday period. It almost bordered on a miracle and was no doubt a major logistical achievement. None of the above would have been possible without Sue and Bernard Burger (see The Team), Swiss Kiwis who have been living in Tauranga since 1999. Sometimes miracles do happen, the right people meet, and they click. Until I move into my new home, the two – practically my project managers – are going to keep a close eye on the building process and this website updated with photos. So: watch this space until the end of September/beginning of October 2013, my intended moving date. |
