„Architecture is the art of how to waste space.“ (Philip Johnson,
Architect)
It is also a way how to waste money, both of which – wasting space and money – is nice if one has lots of it. Otherwise, compromises are the way to go.
When deciding to build a house I was determined to get the most out of my budget by choosing a large-volume building company and a standard design, with only a few individualised tweaks to be done to meet my requirements. I also decided that floor space was not as important as quality fittings and finishings, thus opting for what is perceived as a small house in New Zealand: the Bay Express by G.J. Gardner.
With two patios and a garden, the overall space should add up to a good mix of outdoor and indoor space. Or, in other words: the art of how to maximise space.
